Baker

Baker is an American furniture house with a particular talent for making a home feel inherited, even when the room was furnished yesterday.

Its chairs, cabinets, and tables may evoke an English country estate, a Parisian salon, or 1930s Hollywood, yet they rarely feel like stage props.

The story began in 1890 in Allegan, Michigan.

Dutch immigrant Siebe Baker established a business producing doors and architectural components, and three years later the company made its first piece of furniture: a combination desk and bookcase.

Its most aristocratic expression is the Stately Homes Collection, developed in the 1980s.

Sir Humphry Wakefield selected furniture from historic houses and castles in England, Ireland, Scotland, and Russia.

The result included interpretations of pieces from estates such as Chatsworth, Blenheim Palace, and Longleat.

These were not vague fantasies “in the royal style.”

They were carefully studied reproductions built around historically convincing proportions and details.

Contemporary Baker is equally defined by designer collaborations.

Barbara Barry brought Californian softness and a touch of Hollywood glamour.

Thomas Pheasant introduced a more disciplined elegance.

Jacques Garcia contributed French theatricality.

Jean-Louis Deniot plays freely with historical references.

The Baker name alone therefore does not fully explain the style of an object.

A knowledgeable buyer will often want to know the collection and the designer as well.

The social code of Baker is one of cultivated, respectable affluence.

The furniture belongs naturally in a residence, study, private members’ club, or substantial house.
