Audemars Piguet

  • Olga Zharina | Expert

Audemars Piguet is for people who find Rolex a little too obvious.

Outside affluent circles, not everyone will recognize the name. Inside a private club, however, the octagonal bezel of a Royal Oak is understood immediately.

This is not discreet luxury in the strict sense. The watches are visible, expensive, and highly desirable.

Yet their status rests on more than hype.

Audemars Piguet remains an independent, family-controlled manufacture that combines serious watchmaking with one of the most influential designs of the twentieth century.

The story began in 1875 in the Swiss village of Le Brassus, where Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet established their workshop.

Audemars concentrated on movements and technical development, while Piguet focused on clients and the commercial side of the business.

The manufacture built its reputation on complicated pocket watches, repeaters, chronographs, and calendars.

For knowledgeable collectors, AP is therefore not “the brand that makes the Royal Oak.”

It is a manufacture with a deep technical tradition.

Its continued family independence adds another layer of authority.

The modern legend began with the Royal Oak.

In 1972, Gérald Genta introduced a watch that was unusually large for its time, made in steel, with an octagonal bezel, exposed screws, an integrated bracelet, and a distinctive Tapisserie dial.

According to the house’s history, the design was sketched overnight and drew inspiration from diving equipment.

Its real provocation, however, was economic as much as aesthetic:

a steel watch could cost as much as one made from gold.

Audemars Piguet demonstrated that value could come from concept, architecture, finishing, and craftsmanship rather than the intrinsic price of the metal alone.

The modern category of luxury sports watch was born.

A Royal Oak is easy to recognize but difficult to manufacture well.

Its case and bracelet depend on an exact alternation of brushed surfaces and polished bevels.

As the wrist moves, the metal catches the light almost like jewelry, while the integrated bracelet continues the architecture of the case.

This is why a steel Royal Oak cannot be judged by material weight.

Poor polishing softens the edges and destroys the geometry for which collectors are paying.

On a woman, a Royal Oak can be more powerful than a diamond bracelet.

Smaller versions feel jewel-like.

Mid-sized cases look contemporary and balanced.

Larger versions become an intentional statement.

The choice should be determined by the wrist rather than by the fashion for oversized men’s watches.

Because of the integrated bracelet, a Royal Oak can appear larger than its measurements suggest, and it should curve naturally around the wrist.

Steel with a blue, gray, or silver dial is highly versatile.

Rose gold raises the level of visible luxury.

Diamond-set versions work best when the rest of the look remains restrained.

The Royal Oak Offshore, introduced in 1993, made the original concept larger, more muscular, and more aggressive.

It belongs naturally to the world of yachts, supercars, and people who enjoy a more conspicuous form of energy.

On a slender wrist, however, it can easily become visually overwhelming.

The Royal Oak Concept is aimed at those drawn to futurism and technical experimentation.

Code 11.59 appears closer to conventional round watchmaking from a distance, but its complex case construction and dramatic dials appeal to collectors who want Audemars Piguet without the instantly recognizable Royal Oak silhouette.

The social language of the house changes significantly depending on the model.

A steel Royal Oak without diamonds can suggest that its owner understands the hierarchy of watchmaking — and has access to a watch that is not always easy to obtain.

A gold version speaks more loudly and works especially well with architectural tailoring, silk, cashmere, and restrained evening clothes.

An Offshore carries stronger associations with new wealth, sport, and public success.

A perpetual calendar, tourbillon, or important vintage reference moves the conversation into a different territory altogether.

At that level, mechanical knowledge and collecting matter more than simple recognizability.

One common mistake is assuming that every Royal Oak is a guaranteed investment.

Demand for certain references created substantial premiums on the secondary market, but value still depends on market cycles, condition, size, material, dial, and completeness.

A fashionable reference today is not automatically a future rarity.

Audemars Piguet makes more sense as something to wear and enjoy, while remembering that servicing, insurance, and repairs to the case or bracelet can be expensive.

Authenticity requires professional examination.

Reference and serial information, movement, case, dial, bracelet, and other details all need to correspond correctly.

A box and papers are useful, but they do not replace expertise.

Over-polished cases, non-original components, and watches assembled from parts of different examples are all potential problems.

Servicing is best entrusted to the manufacture or a highly qualified specialist.

And polishing should be approached cautiously.

Normal signs of wear are often less damaging to collector value than losing the original geometry of the case.

Audemars Piguet is also best worn without competing with the watch.

The Royal Oak is already visually strong.

Stacks of bracelets, oversized logos, and additional diamonds can turn an expensive code into a visible attempt to prove wealth.

A well-cut jacket, immaculate grooming, confident conversation, and a Royal Oak on an otherwise uncluttered wrist usually create a far stronger impression.

Audemars Piguet does not promise aristocratic pedigree, nor can it substitute for cultural capital.

Its message is more specific:

the owner has reached a level where she no longer needs to choose the most universally recognized symbol.

She can choose the one recognized by the right people.

The Royal Oak opened steel into the highest ranks of modern watchmaking.

Taste determines whether its wearer enters that world as someone in command — or merely as a fan of an expensive, highly visible accessory.

The business was later continued by the couple’s five daughters. Karl Lagerfeld famously compared the sisters to the five fingers of one hand: each had her own role, but together they operated as a single family organism.

Fendi’s collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld began in 1965 and lasted for more than half a century.

He freed fur from its reputation as heavy status armor and began treating it as a true fashion material — making it lighter, dyeing it, cutting it, reshaping it, and combining it in unexpected ways.

It was during this era that the FF logo appeared, originally standing for Fun Fur.

The symbol brought together two essential elements of Fendi: Rome’s appetite for decoration and the clean graphic confidence of modern design.

Fendi has two distinct personalities.

The first is highly visible: the FF pattern, saturated color, expressive hardware, fur details, and accessories that can be recognized from across a restaurant.

The second is quieter: exceptional leather, hand-finished Selleria stitching, sophisticated construction, and minimal branding.

A monogrammed Fendi piece says that its owner understands fashion and is not afraid of conspicuous luxury.

A restrained Selleria bag communicates something more mature: here, the price is recognized through the material and workmanship rather than the logo.

The Baguette, designed by Silvia Venturini Fendi in 1997, became a cultural phenomenon.

The small bag is carried tucked under the arm like a French baguette, which gave the model its name. Its rectangular shape and FF clasp became the foundation for countless variations in leather, fur, beads, sequins, embroidery, and other decorative techniques.

The Baguette does not need to be the one sensible handbag in a wardrobe.

Its purpose is different.

It exists to express personality, start conversations, and give pleasure to the collector.

The television series Sex and the City helped propel the Baguette into popular culture. Carrie Bradshaw turned the bag into part of the image of a woman for whom fashion was a language of personal freedom.

From that point on, the Baguette belonged not only to luxury fashion, but to the wider cultural imagination.

A classic FF Baguette says, “I know the code.”

A rare embroidered or archival version says something more: “I do not merely buy fashion. I collect it.”

The Peekaboo, introduced by Silvia Venturini Fendi in 2008, expresses another side of the house.

Its name refers to the children’s game: the structured exterior opens slightly to reveal a contrasting interior that may be richly finished or unexpectedly decorative.

Outside, discipline.

Inside, a private performance.

This duality makes the Peekaboo particularly effective in both professional and social settings. It looks expensive without relying on an all-over monogram, and feminine without becoming frivolous.

Selleria is the password for anyone who wants to understand Fendi beyond the boutique window.

It refers to a traditional approach to leather craftsmanship characterized by prominent hand stitching and careful construction.

These pieces are valued for their tactility, structure, and the time invested by the artisan.

Not everyone at the next table will recognize the model. Someone with an experienced eye, however, will notice the quality immediately.

Selleria suits the woman who has moved beyond buying for recognition and has begun looking for craftsmanship with lasting value.

Choosing Fendi is largely a question of choosing the role you want the piece to play.

A Baguette works beautifully for dinner, evenings out, or an outfit that needs a strong fashion accent.

A medium Peekaboo feels appropriate at meetings, in an elegant hotel, at an exhibition, or over a business lunch.

FF bags add energy to a simple coat or tailored suit.

A restrained Selleria bag in fine leather can accompany cashmere, silk blouses, and beautifully made everyday shoes for years.

The more expressive the bag, the calmer its surroundings should usually be.

The greatest mistake is trying to wear all of Rome at once.

A heavily monogrammed handbag, FF belt, statement earrings, branded shoes, and fur trim in a single outfit can destroy the sense of status and leave only visible effort.

One strong Fendi code is enough.

An embroidered Baguette should be treated almost like jewelry. A Peekaboo benefits from clean tailoring. A bold monogram looks more sophisticated surrounded by solid colors.

Fendi loves drama, but drama requires direction.

Fendi does not disguise wealth as anonymous minimalism.

Its luxury lives openly, but never accidentally.

Behind the monogram stand a Roman workshop, a family dynasty, a decades-long partnership with one of fashion’s most influential designers, and a remarkable ability to turn accessories into cultural objects.

The right Fendi piece says more than, “I can afford this.”

It says something more compelling:

“I know how to enjoy status — and I understand what it is made of.”
