Bvlgari

  • Olga Zharina | Expert

Bvlgari is jewelry with a distinctly Roman temperament.

It has little interest in appearing fragile or disappearing into the background. The house embraces bold proportions, yellow gold, saturated gemstones, and color combinations that a more restrained French jeweler might consider excessive.

That confidence is precisely the point.

Bvlgari does not ask a woman to make herself smaller for the sake of the jewelry.

It gives her greater scale.

The house was founded in Rome in 1884 by Sotirio Bulgari, a Greek silversmith who arrived in Italy with both craftsmanship and entrepreneurial ambition.

His first shop was on Via Sistina, while Via Condotti later became the house’s most important address.

Greek origins and Roman identity came together in the name — written with the classical Latin V — and in an aesthetic shaped by antiquity, architecture, and Mediterranean color.

By the middle of the twentieth century, Bvlgari had moved decisively away from the more restrained conventions of French jewelry and developed a language of its own.

Diamonds appeared alongside emeralds, sapphires, rubies, turquoise, amethyst, and coral.

The cabochon became especially important: a smooth, rounded stone without a faceted surface.

Its volume could evoke the domes of Rome while giving color a deep, almost tactile intensity.

Jewelry was no longer simply an announcement of carat weight.

It became a composition.

The great heroine of Bvlgari is the serpent: Serpenti.

The first Serpenti bracelet-watches appeared in 1948, with flexible Tubogas coils wrapping around the wrist and the watch head completing the form.

The name Tubogas refers to industrial gas tubing. Metal bands are wrapped into a flexible structure, creating a smooth, spring-like form.

Bvlgari thus connected an ancient symbol of renewal and seduction with modern engineering.

Serpenti can take many forms.

A restrained gold coil works easily in the city.

An enamel serpent demands a more dramatic setting.

High-jewelry versions belong to collections, galas, and red carpets.

This is not jewelry for a woman who wants to appear defenseless.

It speaks of sensuality, control, and the ability to shed one skin without losing one’s identity.

For that reason, Serpenti can become especially compelling with maturity, when character matters more than universal approval.

The Roman dolce vita strengthened the mythology of the house.

The Via Condotti boutique attracted aristocrats, international society, and film stars. Elizabeth Taylor became particularly associated with Bvlgari while filming Cleopatra in Rome and assembled an extraordinary collection of the house’s jewelry.

That history still shapes the atmosphere around the brand:

a grand hotel, a film studio, a palazzo, dinner after a premiere, and a woman who knows perfectly well that people are looking at her.

Other collections reveal the more everyday side of Bvlgari.

B.zero1, introduced in 1999, draws inspiration from the architecture of the Colosseum and has an almost industrial character.

Divas’ Dream, with its fan-shaped motif inspired by the mosaics of the Baths of Caracalla, offers a softer entrance into the house.

Monete incorporates ancient coins into contemporary jewelry.

Such pieces communicate not only wealth, but an interest in history — a far rarer quality than owning yet another familiar pendant.

A serious purchase should be chosen according to personality rather than fame.

For daytime, a B.zero1 ring, a smaller Divas’ Dream piece, or a restrained Serpenti bracelet can work beautifully.

A woman who naturally wears larger jewelry may be better served by an expressive colored-stone ring than by choosing something tiny simply to own the name.

Bvlgari is meant to have presence.

But the scale still needs to suit the hand, height, face, and wardrobe of the woman wearing it.

The styling rule is simple:

give the jewelry space.

A major necklace needs an open neckline and a simple dress.

Colored earrings benefit from restrained hair.

A Serpenti bracelet is strongest against a clean sleeve without several competing bracelets beside it.

Bvlgari works exceptionally well with white, black, navy, emerald green, and camel tones.

Yellow gold can be especially beautiful against warm skin, but confidence matters more than complexion.

A common mistake is trying to amplify a house that is already visually powerful.

Large gemstones, leopard print, a plunging neckline, heavy makeup, and bright nails together can turn Roman glamour into caricature.

Another mistake is wearing several serpents without any sense of composition.

A third is assuming that any large, colorful stone automatically communicates high jewelry.

At Bvlgari, color harmony, proportion, setting, and construction matter enormously.

Cheap imitation reveals itself quickly.

Socially, Bvlgari occupies a very specific position.

Cartier feels more official.

Van Cleef & Arpels is softer.

Bvlgari communicates the pleasure of wealth.

It belongs naturally to a Mediterranean villa, a yacht, an art fair, or a gala dinner.

This is less the code of old aristocracy than that of an international elite with cinematic taste — people who not only possess wealth, but know how to enjoy it.

With vintage pieces, provenance, the condition of the stones, repairs, and documentation all require careful attention.

Monete, complex Serpenti designs, and important cabochon pieces demand more knowledge than a simple ring.

Not every jewel becomes an investment, but strong design, rarity, and excellent condition can increase collector interest.

The best Bvlgari does not say:

“Look how many stones I am wearing.”

It says:

“I am not afraid of color, scale, or the beautiful life — and I know exactly how to handle all three.”
